Current Information:Age-33 27 Woolwich Manor Way, North Woolwich Born-West Ham On the morning of 2nd June, 1916, A and B Companies of 12th King’s Royal Rifle Corps of 60 Brigade, 20th Division were ordered from their billets in Ypres to reinforce the Canadian Division who were under attack at Sanctuary Wood and who had lost some of their trenches there. They remained with the Canadians until 5th May when a counter attack was launched and the trenches recaptured. During the whole of this time the artillery fire from both sides was very intense and included shells of all types and calibre. The Battalion Diary does not go into further detail but it seems likely that it was shell fire that caused the death of William Goffin, who was killed in action on 2nd June. |
